Guidelines for Letter Writers

Thank you for your willingness to write a candid letter of recommendation for one or more of our students applying to medical school. The letters carry much weight in the decision process, and therefore your perspective is greatly appreciated.

The AAMC (American Association of Medical Colleges) has created a document which provides information on what medical school admissions committees are looking for in a letter of recommendation: essentially, an “accurate assessment of the applicant’s suitability for medical school.” Please read their document before writing your letter of recommendation.

Also, please note that more often than not, an exact copy of your letter will be sent to the medical school. Therefore, your letter MUST be on appropriate letterhead, and have your signature. It can be forwarded to us via campus mail or US Mail. The Medical Careers Advisory Committee here at TCNJ may also need to incorporate all or some of your comments in a composite letter, and therefore we also request that you send an electronic copy of the letter to us as well.

Letters should be sent to:     Dr. Amanda Norvell, Chairperson, Medical Careers Advisory Committee, Department of Biology, The College of New Jersey, PO Box 7718, 2000 Pennington Rd, Ewing, NJ 08628-0718

They can be sent electronically to norvell@tcnj.edu, and/or to hakull@tcnj.edu.

Be certain to complete the Letter Request Form that the student should have provided to you as well.

Thank you once again for your efforts in this regard.
